The
Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) says it is introducing innovative products by
reinventing itself through leveraging on digitalisation to compete in the
global space.
Mr Bisi
Adegbuyi, the Postmaster-General of NIPOST made this known at the commemoration
of the World Post Day in Abuja.
“There is
so much to be gained from diversifying our products going by the present trend.
“There is
so much to be gained from this transformation, you must satisfy your customers
who are with the money. We are reinventing ourselves by leveraging on
digitisation.
“And with
all the strong political support we are getting from the Federal Government and
the parliament, they have demonstrated their total commitment and their
readiness to pass laws that will diversify the productive space of this country
and ensure that the postal revolution is achieved.
“As we
stand to meet the United Nations Development Goals, we should not forget that
the postal infrastructure as the enabler of inclusive development and a key
platform for delivering public services important to the attainment of the
SDGs.
“So,
NIPOST is introducing International Postal Service Track and Trace System,
Mobile Electronic Stamp, Address Verification System and financial inclusive
services.
“All
these are to ensure that the post meets current demands of customers and to
make the post viable with the collaboration of other government agencies like
the CBN and the private sector,’’ he said.
Adegbuyi
called on all citizens to come on board and join hands with NIPOST to make the
agency a successful revenue generating organisation for the nation.
Mr
Adebayo Shittu, the Minister of Communications said that with the kind of
infrastructure and trained personnel that NIPOST has, the agency could serve as
a life wire for development.
He said
that with the vast offices nationwide including assets such as lands and
vehicles, NIPOST was a game changer if all hands were put on deck.
Shittu
also called on lawmakers to fast track the postal bill for quick
transformation.
NAN
reports that about 150 countries take part in celebrating the World Post Day
every year.
Some
countries use the commemoration to promote their new postal services or
products as well as rewarding their employees for good services.
Others
also organise philatelic (stamps) exhibitions and issue new stamps.
Some of
the events usually lined up for the occasion include displaying posters on
World Post Day in post offices and in public places.
Public
conferences, seminars and workshops including cultural, sport, and recreational
activities are also part of the celebrations.
The theme
for the year’s celebration is: “Transform to remain an enabler of inclusiveness
development and an essential component of the global economy’’.
NAN
reports that the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the world body of postal
agencies was established in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland and its anniversary is
celebrated on Oct. 9, every year.
The
anniversary of the UPU was declared as the World Post Day by the Universal
Postal Union Congress in Tokyo, Japan in 1969.
On Jan.
1, 1985, NIPOST was established from the postal division of the Post and
Telecommunications Department.
