Tanker crushes pupils of same parents

Tragedy struck in Osun State on Tuesday when a fuel tanker crushed two pupils of the same parents to death in Ikirun.

Our correspondent gathered that the two pupils were waiting for the bus of the private school they were attending when the tanker’s head detached and crushed the two pupils to death.

Eyewitnesses said that it took some hours before officials of Federal Road Safety Corps could hire a truck which lifted the truck on top of the pupils.

A resident of the town, who identified himself as Sola, told our correspondent that the accident was due to speeding.

The Unit Commander of the FRSC in Ikirun, Mr. Gabriel Esan, confirmed the accident in a telephone interview with our correspondent.

Esan said, “Two pupils were crushed by a tanker today. The accident happened on Ikirun-Okuku Road. We had to hire a truck to lift the tanker before we could remove the two pupils.

“One of them died on the spot, while the other one was badly injured but was still breathing when he was taken to a hospital.”

The FRSC boss appealed to motorists to ensure that their vehicles were in good condition before putting them on the road.

He also urged drivers against violating traffic rules, saying doing so would save many lives and would ensure decorum on the roads.
